DEPARTMENT: POSITION: DESCRIPTION:
ANTHROPOLOGY ANTHROPOLOGY COLLECTIONS AND MANAGEMENT ASSISTANT Schedule: Shifts available Monday – Thursday, 9:00 a.m.– 5:00 p.m.
Training: Interested volunteers are encouraged to sign up for the Anthropology Collections Management 101 class being offered by the Museum starting May 25 and are required to attend the Museum orientation.

The Anthropology Department is recruiting volunteers to assist the collections manager with cataloguing, object handling, storage, updating records and much more.
COLLECTIONS AND RESEARCH EDUCATION COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT
Schedule: Four-hour shifts. Monday morning, Monday afternoon, Tuesday afternoon, and Thursday afternoon shifts available
Training: Staff will train, Museum orientation

Work behind the scenes in collections dedicated to hands-on and classroom use. Assist with pulling specimens and setting up carts for classes. Must be able to lift and move freely.
LIBRARY & ARCHIVES LIBRARY AND ARCHIVES SCANNING TECHNICIAN

Schedule: One full day or one half day shift per week, available 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday
Training: Staff will train, Museum Orientation

If you are detail-oriented, computer savy and enjoy working behind the scenes, this volunteer opportunity might be the perfect fit for you. Assist the Museum Archivist to improve the speed and quality of archives information by scanning historical documents and publications, converting scans to a word processing format, and proofing digital scans to ensure accuracy.

LIFELONG LEARNING LECTURE COMMITTEE VOLUNTEER

Schedule: Varies, typically evenings for 2-3 hours per event. One meeting on the first Wednesday morning of every month.
Training: Staff will train, Museum orientation

Volunteers are needed to staff evening lectures at the Museum–sell tickets, check people in as they arrive, answer questions, etc. Other duties may include: assisting staff in a busy office that is responsible for adult lectures, courses, symposia, community outreach projects, domestic trips, and the paleontology certification courses.

MUSEUM CONSERVATION CONSERVATION CATALOGUING ASSISTANT

Schedule: One four or five hour shift per week
Training: Staff will provide initial training

Provide support to the Conservation Department by rehousing condition and textile report forms after data entry phase is complete. Responsible for maintaining the accuracy of data in proper files for future references and/or locating.

SECURITY VOLUNTEER SECURITY ASSISTANT

Schedule: Four hour shifts are available seven days a week.
Training: Staff will train, Museum orientation

The Museum’s Security Department is looking for volunteers to assist the department personnel in ensuring that visitors have a safe and fun Museum experience. Volunteers will provide support to the security personnel, answer visitor questions, assist with crowd control, help the school entrance staff with school groups, be informed of emergency procedures, and identify potential security or safety problems.

SPECIAL EVENTS FACE PAINTERS
Schedule: Flexible, weekends, weekdays and evenings
Training: Staff will train, Museum orientation

Friendly, outgoing, artistic ability and/or interest a must. Face painters needed to help out with Museum Free Days, festivals, and various evening events on an on-call basis, painting faces of Museum visitors, predominately children.
SPECIAL EVENTS SPECIAL EVENTS RESERVE VOLUNTEER

Schedule: On call, flexible, weekdays and weekends, occasional evenings
Training: Staff will train, Museum orientation

In this fun and creative volunteer position you will assist with occasional evening events such as member and media nights, festivals, and Museum Free Days. Volunteers help families explore and experience the Museum in a variety of ways, from directing visitors to making crafts to painting faces.

VISITOR PROGRAMS

GALLERY EXPERIENCES VOLUNTEER

 

Schedule: Monday-Friday 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m., Saturday-
Sunday, noon-4:00 p.m.; one four hour shift per week
Training: March/April 2004, Museum orientation

Help bring the Museum's diorama halls and galleries to life with hands-on activities designed for our school-aged visitors. Facilitate activity carts with topics ranging from Anthropology to Zoology!

VISITOR PROGRAMS HALL OF LIFE EXHIBIT INTERPRETER

Schedule: Four-hour shifts available weekdays and weekends
Training: New volunteers will attend three training sessions in March; Museum orientation

Volunteers facilitate on-floor activities with visitors on a variety of health and wellness topics. Activities include: nutrition touch cart, DNA touch cart, x-ray demo, sense of touch activity, how sound travels activity, “beer goggles” demo, and two organ dissections – heart and lung.

VISITOR PROGRAMS GALAXY GUIDE

Schedule: Four-and-a-half-hour shifts available weekdays and weekends
Training: 24 hours of formal training and 16 hours of on-the-job training beginning April 26, Museum Orientation.

Galaxy Guides facilitate hands-on space science activities and demonstrations for the public in the Space Odyssey Gallery. Galaxy Guides work as a team, delivering an out-of-this world educational experience for our visitors through innovative, interactive live performances and demonstrations, and one-on-one conversations with visitors. The Space Odyssey philosophy is one that promotes curiosity and continued learning experiences for people of all ages. Galaxy Guides have a zest for life and a zeal for space science!

VISITOR PROGRAMS TEMPORARY EXHIBIT: THE QUEST FOR IMMORTALITY: TREASURES OF ANCIENT EGYPT

Schedule: One four-hour shift per week, available Monday-Sunday
Training: 15-18 hours of training conducted in late Summer; Museum orientation.

Help visitors explore the world of the ancient Egyptians. This is the largest collection of art and antiquities ever to be loaned by Egypt, and will be shown at the Museum September 2004 through January 2005.  Volunteers will join a team of exhibit interpreters and visitor service volunteers. The Exhibit Volunteer interprets exhibition content information, facilitates discovery learning and helps with the Visitor Service function as needed. Visitor Service volunteers assist visitors by greeting, checking tickets, helping visitors find their way, checking coats and providing quality customer service.

VISITOR PROGRAMS DISCOVERY ZONE INTERPRETER
Schedule: Wednesday–Friday, 11:00 A.M.3:00 P.M., Saturday–Sunday, 12:00 P.M.4:00 P.M, one four-hour shift per week
Training: Staff will train, Museum orientation. New volunteer training will start in the fall. Training dates to be determined.

Would you enjoy assisting families and children with interactive, hands-on, discovery learning exhibits and experiments? If so, this is the perfect opportunity for you! Dig deep and help to bring the excitement of science to Museum visitors.
VISITOR PROGRAMS PREHISTORIC JOURNEY EXHIBIT INTERPRETER

Schedule: Four-hour shift, morning and afternoon shifts available weekdays and weekends
Training: Staff will train, Museum orientation

Perfect job for a volunteer who enjoys working as part of a team. Assist visitors of all ages in our award-winning Prehistoric Journey exhibition. Answer questions about our exhibition and its content. Volunteers will also act as facilitators for hands-on activities.

VISITOR SERVICES IMAX TICKET TAKER

Schedule: One four-hour shift per week, morning or afternoon, available Monday-Friday.
Training: Staff will train, Museum orientation

Volunteers are needed to take tickets in the IMAX lobby. This position is perfect for someone with solid customer service skills and someone who enjoys working with people of all ages. This position involves greeting visitors in the IMAX lobby, checking tickets, directing traffic flow, answering visitor questions, and assisting staff with ensuring all shows run on schedule.

VISITOR SERVICES MUSEUM GREETER

Schedule: Four-hour shift, morning and afternoon shifts available weekdays and weekends
Training: Staff will train, Museum orientation

Open the doors to nature and science! Welcome our visitors and lead them to a world of treasures as a Museum Greeter by providing information and directions from our Welcome Cart, using objects to help visitors get excited about their Museum visit.

VISITOR SERVICES SCHOOL ENTRANCE VOLUNTEER

Schedule: One four-hour shift per week, available Monday-Friday
Training: Staff will train, Museum orientation

Assist school entrance staff with processing school group visitors. This high-energy job entails greeting school groups, directing traffic flow, collecting and distributing lunches and coats, and helping school groups to have a safe and fun experience at the Museum.

VISITOR SERVICES VISITOR SERVICES SPECIALIST
Schedule: One four-hour shift per week, 9:00 A.M.–1:00 P.M. or 1:00 P.M.–5:00 P.M.
Training: Staff will train, Museum orientation

This is an up-front, personal, and fun volunteer job. Rotate among all frontline positions. Greet and welcome visitors; check coats, take tickets, and work at the Information desk. Must be people oriented and able to stand and walk for long periods of time.

WEB SITE WEB SITE DEPARTMENT ASSISTANT

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 5-15 hours per week. Hours will vary from week to week.
Training: Staff will train, Museum orientation

Assist the Web Team with quality assurance. Volunteer must be exceptionally detail-oriented and possess solid interpersonal skills. Volunteer should be comfortable working with computers and be able to learn new applications quickly. This temporary position ends April 30, 2004. Please note: this is not a Web Design position.
