Seeing the White Buffalo
Robert B. Pickering
In the summer of 1994, the birth of a white buffalo calf in Wisconsin captured the nation’s attention. Some Native Americans hailed the calf’s birth as a great omen. Others considered it a mere curiosity.

The event inspired Dr. Pickering to research the historical, spiritual, and biological significance of the white buffalo. Seeing the White Buffalo explores the phenomena of this unique animal from both scientific and cultural perspectives, examining such topics as color variation in the species from the Pleistocene to the present and the white buffalo’s spiritual importance to Native Americans. Photographs and paintings illustrate the author’s findings.

Robert B. Pickering is former head of the Department of Anthropology at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. He has written books on both archaeology and forensic anthropology.
