The Dueck Family: Wenda (the mom), Josh (18), Lauren (17), Paul (14), and John (11)

Galaxy Guide Roles
Assist visitors with Spectroscopy Cart, Sundial Cart, Living in Space Cart, and Phases of the Moon demonstration, among other activities

How did you become involved in Space Odyssey?
Lauren had a friend who volunteered here last year with the teen program, and Wenda was looking for a way to get her children, whom she homeschools, involved at the Museum. Josh, Paul, and John are especially interested in science.

What was your impression the day you first saw Space Odyssey as a volunteer?
Wenda: My first impression was John standing at my bedside at 6:00 a.m. waking me up saying, “We gotta go, we gotta go!”
John: When we first came it was hard because we didn’t know where to start—there are so many things to see and do! But my first thought was, “Wow, this is really sweet.”

What’s your favorite part of Space Odyssey?
Paul: I really like Shuttle Docking.
Lauren: I like talking to all the volunteers and trainers, the astrophysicists and scientists.
Josh: Trying everything out, all of the hands-on activities.
Paul: And we’ve learned a whole lot, especially through the lecture portion of the training.

What’s your overall impression of volunteering as a Museum Galaxy Guide?
Wenda: I feel an incredible amount of responsibility since this is an entirely new concept. But I’m really looking forward to talking to the visitors and sharing it with them!
