Coming up.................
The Museum has set the stage for a series of exhibitions that will take visitors on adventures that span the globe. Here is a look at the lineup:
Vikings: The North Atlantic Saga
March 2-May 28
The Vikings' expansion from Scandinavia across the North Atlantic to America 1,000 years ago stands as one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of exploration. This special exhibition, developed by the National Museum of Natural History at the Smithsonian, showcases spectacular artifacts from every point along the westward course and discusses new findings that shed light on Viking seamanship and the disappearance of the Norse colonies in Greenland. Among the treasures are silver hoards, looted jewelry, medieval church carvings dated 1050-1400 A.D., and saga manuscripts from the 13th and 14th centuries.
Voyages of Discovery
September 7, 2001-January 4, 2002
This important exhibition takes visitors on some of the major British voyages that helped revolutionize our views of the world. Produced by London's Natural History Museum, this exhibition explores the extraordinary discoveries from unknown lands. Featured explorers include Captain James Cook, who led the first voyage to include natural scientists recording their discoveries; and Charles Darwin, whose Origin of Species offered a simple explanation for the visible diversity of life. The displays will include precious specimens, exquisite artworks, journals, and other historical items.
