Smoke and thunder:
This giant smoke plume is from a large fire southwest of Denver, Colorado,
on the afternoon of June 11, 2002. Fires can make their own weather. Winds
can reach up to 120 miles per hour. Ash and soot particles collect moisture
as they rise and may even contribute to the development of thunderheads
over the fire.
