Scavengers move in: Large animals such as deer and bears usually get out of the fire’s path. Small burrowing animals stay safe underground. Some animals inevitably die, though, especially in such a fast, hot fire as the Hayman. Scavengers such as turkey vultures usually appear soon after a fire passes.
